Review: Don’t be Afraid of The Dark

Don’t be Afraid of The Dark is a horror movie that did not scare me at all. To be honest, I almost fell asleep in the movie. One of the people I was watching Don’t be Afraid of The Dark with actually fell asleep; he woke up because of a loud music that was played in the supposedly scary part of the movie.

Before I pour out my hatred towards Don’t be Afraid of The Dark, I would like to tell you the main plot. The movie started some fifty years ago with this artist on his basement. He had a maid that he tricked into going to the basement to get her teeth. He then opened a fire pit and put the teeth inside and talked to particularly no one and said something like “here’s your teeth, I know it’s not children’s like you wanted it to be, but can I please have my son back?” In the end of the scene he was sucked in the fire pit. It then jumped to the present. A little girl was sent to her father and his fiancé, who are both interior designers of the artist’s house who mysteriously disappeared. She then heard whispers in the ventilation asking her to play with them. Quickly after that she found the basement. The whispers asked her to open the fire pit, which she did, and the whispers turned from being friendly to violent. The whispers turned out to be little creatures that feed on little kid’s teeth.

Overall, Katie Holmes is the only main actress in Don’t be Afraid of The Dark that played her role quite well. Bailee Madison, who played sally, a girl being terrorized by the creepy creatures living in the fire pit in the basement, did very poorly. Her acting was so horrible that it doesn’t really seem like she’s scared. How can Don’t be Afraid of The Dark get anyone scared if the actress doesn’t even act scared? Another main actor that did bad was Guy Pearce, who played the father of Bailee Madison. He was somewhat robotic in some parts. He looked liked he memorized his lines sentence by sentence and just stood in front of the camera and recite them without any emotions. In my opinion, agreeing to be in this movie might ruin their careers. The story was horrible. It wasn’t thrilling at all.

I think what ruined the movie the most is the over showing of the little creatures who wants to hurt Sally. It’s not like any other horror movies, I’m saying this not in a good way. In other alien-ish movies, they will only show you glimpses of the creatures, which would make the movie more thrilling and scary. If Don’t be Afraid of The Dark followed this layout, it could have been a much better movie. Don’t be Afraid of The Dark was a waste of money and time. I wasted ninety-nine minutes of my life watching it. I would much rather watch Spy Kids: All the Time In the World, how sad it that?
