I have already learned a lot of things in English 111. Some of the things that I’ve learned are how to be a good writer, how to communicate with others, and to improve something using Kaizen.
In the beginning of the school year we talked about Rhetoric, the art or craft of effective communication. I learned about the rhetoric triangle. In this triangle there’s an author with goals and ideas that crafts a message to satisfy its audience that has expectations, goals, and desires. I’ve also learned that good writing is writing that helps to ensure that the author’s objectives and agendas are met for a given audience. When we were given an assignment to write a review, reading “How to Write a Review” in Writing Today helped me finish the assignment. We also talked a lot about the Writing Process, a process that one applies to be more successful. I learned that the Writing Process has six steps: Prewriting, Drafting, Revision, Proofreading/Editing, Publishing/Delivery, and Review. Following these steps will make one a successful writer. We also learned about the appeals triangle which includes: logos (logical) which deals with logics, facts, subjective and word; pathos (emotional) which deals with persuading by using one’s emotions; and ethos (credibility) which deals with ethics, ethnic, one’s reputation, trust and identification. Lastly we learned about Kaizen, the way of managing big problems so you can focus on problems that you can do something about. We’ve been working on using Kaizen in our blogs. We use Kaizen for something that we want to improve.
